Psychotherapy has many factors that affect the process between the client and psychotherapist. We cannot just determine the therapy as conversation between the client and therapist to solve clients’ problem or the session that client talking about himself/herself and psychotherapist directly find the solutions for him/her. Psychotherapist has many resources which can take help to see the client clearly and one of the source could be observation that is effective to see the clients’ mental situation.
Observation can make by any referral resources or psychotherapist own self who is related with the clients and the places of observation might be chosen depend on the clients’ age, status or types of problem. For example, patient who has depressive disorder cannot just be diagnosed by talking with him/her. Even it is diagnosed, psychotherapist have to find the reasons of depression. If the patient has a stressful job, and manager who has done mobbing at work, we can easily find the problem but checking the house life, relationship with his/her family or spouse could also be helpful to see accurate reasons for depression.
In another example, children are the difficult patients to interview with. Various reasons could make difficult to conversation. Age, personalities of children change the process of session. Moreover, development of children is a changeable process to understand them and each age group of children can not easily express themself. For example, child who is three years old can not tell to therapist his/her emotions, feelings that are effect his/her behaviours or thoughts. Game therapy might be one example of the observation even if it has some conversation and contact between the therapist and child.
In conclusion, observation possess lots of factors which are effective to sustain interviewing effectively. Understanding the reasons of behaviors, emotions or thoughts, monitoring the patients to find the factors that is effective such as friends, colleagues, parents, managers or work areas, houses and schools are influential data to shape the process of therapy.
